Cannaregio
MapCannaregio extends from the new Calatrava bridge between the bus station and the train station all across the north of the main island of Venice out to meet Castello and San Marco in the East.
Cannaregio is the perfect sestiere if you want to experience the 'real Venice' - it is still home to many true Venetians. It occupies the whole area to the north of the Grand Canal. It includes the main cinema, plenty of supermarkets and markets, a swimming pool, public parks, schools, gyms, rowing clubs, bars, restaurants and lots more!
You can find the houses where Tintoretto, Tiziano and Guardi lived and where Wagner died.
The first 'ghetto' in the world is in the centre of the sestiere and you can visit the synagogues and Jewish museum.
Cannaregio includes the railway station which has trains to Milan, Rome, Florence and beyond. It is the closest sestiere to the airport and there are direct boats. From Fondamente Nove you can also reach all the islands of the Northern Lagoon (Murano, Mazzorbo, Burano, Sant'Erasmo and Torcello).
There are 73 bridges crossing about 40 canals dividing Cannaregio into 33 islands.
