Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
MapAfter the Basilica of St. Mark's, the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the most remarkable ecclesiastical complex in Venice, as well as being one of the most important Franciscan foundations in Italy. Originally built between 1236 and 1338 by the Franciscan Conventual Friars, the structure was thoroughly re-modelled in the 14th century and given its present more grandiose form of central nave, two side aisles and seven apsidal chapels after Franciscan-Gothic designs. Over the centuries the basilica has become a veritable treasure-chest of exceptional works of art.

San Marco is more for guests and tourists, but Frari is true main Venice cathedral: lots of important historical figures are burried here, including Titian (whose masterpiece you can find in altar)

This church houses what’s probably the most amazing concentration of art and history in Venice that’s not in a museum. No wonder Canova’s heart is entombed here.

It features the work of three great Renaissance masters: Donatello, Giovanni Bellini, and Titian in the setting for which it was designed.

The Donatello is one of the statues in the chapel to the immediate right of the altar. Also Titian's heart is in large pyramid to the left when you walk in.

Incredible array of tombs, memorials, altars, carved wooden choir stalls, a Titian and a Donatello sculpture. Not bad going for one church.

Looks unassuming from the outside but wow, what frescoes and statues inside. As many good paintings as in an average good museum.

Get the audioguide. The signs aren't terribly helpful.

Se lhe dessem a escolher uma única obra de arte de Veneza, poderia muito bem ser o retábulo de Bellini desta igreja, o maior e mais importante da cidade. Translate
